| Wednesday, 30th November, "Upgrade" |
 |
On an internet shop I bought the ZIFtype CPU upgrade card G3/900 for Kate's old Power Mac G3DT233 selling at 14,000 yen, which I have been looking for a long time waiting for the price going down reasonably. I could not just let the old Mac die on the shelf, so I started to install the card to get this machine working for the office again. As soon as I started this G3 again after for so long, I immediately remembered the reason why this machine had to sleep on the shelf until today. When I tried to upgrade OSX10.2 from OSX 10.1.4, on the half way through, this machine always freezes, and even previous version of OSX got damaged and I had to try re-installing software a hundred times again and again in vain. That was why Kate now has a new Mac Mini on her desk! Anyway, I was so determined this time not to waste this new investment, I looked up all the web pages of Apple Technical Support and Discussion Board to find out if anybody had the same problems in the past or now. Then I found hundreds of pieces written about the same problems on G3DT. They taught me that all I had to to do was to take the new memory cards out from the mother board while installating. It worked and now we have this machine back in the office!! But, we have already 5 Macs in our office, What shall I use with this one for... (HK) |

| Tuesday, 29th November, "Open School " |
 |
Kate and I went to Ukishima Primary School open day. Sean's class was doing 'Moral' hour. Discussion about the little girl who ignored the Queue of 10 people to get onto the bus on a very rainy day, she tried getting onto the bus first. her mother was very upset and kind of stiff. I thought, oh no, not again. This issue is probably very typical Japanese thing about one has to have the deep consideration all the time for other people. But, elderly people and children should be put onto the public transport first anyway? (HK)
I love the Japanese consideration for others, but witnessing this class I was horrified at the way "morality" is taught rather than social philosophy discussed. The class of 10 year olds were bored out of their wits by the patronising and narrow tone of the story. The teacher was in a state of accute embarassment. Not sure if this was because he is shy in front of the parents or because he realised what a weak case the story provided for the lesson he was supposed to be teaching.
Absolutely zero discussion ensued despite the teacher's diffident attempts at eliciting responses. The teacher himself is very much a product of the Japanese education system where everything is systemised with only a right or wrong answer. As he was therefore only looking for the correct formularistic answers, and no hands volunteered into the stifled air, he picked on resolutely bowed figures in turn who duly mumbled what they knew the answer was supposed to be repressing any personal, or heaven forbid different, opinion. I as dying for one of them to say something provocative or funny to liven up the class, but all the children seemed to switched off to risk such anarchic behaviour. Or maybe these lovely kids (they are all really well mannered kind people) considered the feelings of their teacher who lacks the confidence to improvise under pressure. Whichever it struck me the lesson had already been learned and the class was such an obvious waste of time that all concerned would have been much better off learning a few lessons about possibilities and limits in physics and social interaction and the balance of personal interest and social responsibility by creating mutual fun with a snow ball fight in the playground. | Sunday, 27th November, "Emily's 13th Birthday" |
 |
Happy birthday, Emily. Children from primary school and Juniour High school came to the party.(HK)
Birthday parties are getting easier - used to have to prepare lots of games, etc. Now all I have to do is prepare a mountain of food and tell them all when it is ready so that they can take a break from playing to eat. Girls and boys seemed to split into to distinct groups - the girls all playing ball games and the like outside and the boys glued to computer games or comic books. I have got to try and impose a ban on computers going on when there is a house full of friends who could all have more fun playing together. Now that we are into teenager age maybe I should be happy the computer distracts the boys.
Kata did his usual trick of escaping the birthday party (had to go to a meeting of the Prefectural Board for Beautiful Landscape - well I know it sounds a bit airy fairy, but actully they are doing some positive research into how to preserve and restore the environment) (KT)

Not Exorcist. Chinese letters of "10"and "3".(HK)
Last night I spent the midnight hours making two cakes and had the daft idea of making them spell 13 in Japanese. Several of the kids did seem to think there was some obscure Christian significance. Next year think I will stick to Arabic numerals or just plain squares of circles. (KT)

| Sunday, 20th November, "High School Trip" |
 |
These are my High school friends. Yesterday I went down to Tokyo again to join the overnight reunion party in a traditional Japanese hotel in Tokyo with people who are mostly living in Tokyo. It was tremendous fun to see old school friends after 30 years, finding out they look exactly like 30years ago.(HK) |
 |
When I came back home, the Mukai family came with fresh fish, which Mr.Mukai just caught on fishing holiday. We had whisky and vodka to go with the fish together.(HK)
I had just made shepherd's pie for supper for 4 when the 5 Mukai's turned up. But the odd combination of pooled resources seemed to go down OK. Both Kata and Mr Mukai had the hangover to proove it the next morning. It was a shame Adam was not here - he would have loved the gorgeous colour of the fish and might even have been able to tell us what the 3 different types were. (Adam flies home from Tokyo tomorrow and phone in the middle of the chaos of Mukai's arriving to say goodbye) (KT)

| Wednesday, 16th November, "Lost in Ikebukuro" |
| I took first train down to Tokyo to meet up with Adam from Grizedale Arts to go to the meeting in Toshima Mirai Culture Foundation about their project in Ikebukuro next year. I was at the park rather early,15 minuets or so, where I was meant to be meeting up with Adam, hoping he might be there already. Mr. and Mrs.Kamikado and Mr.Kumagai arriver on time,1:00pm, who are the local representives. At 1:15, we are getting twitchy start wondering if Adam is capable to find the right meeting point in the centre of Ikebukuro town in Tokyo - they start telling me all sorts of stories about how all foreigners visiting Ikebukuro will be lost in this gigantic maze of the station building and be found starving on the other side of the town after a few hours, basically trying to accuse me of being a terribly stupid person who is so irresponsible that I just tell him to come to somehwere alone. Well, what can I do about it now. I always managed myself alone in London or Paris or even in Cairo on my Yamaha motorcycle! Anyway, meeting was scheduled at 2:00pm. They frantically spread out around station to find him, but all in vain. Eventually we decided to have lunch at a Soba noodle restaurant next to the park. They all went first, and left me alone waiting for him in the park. Then at 1:40pm, Mrs. Kamikado came out to send me to eat. At 1:45pm, Adam suddenly appeared with her coming into restaurant at last! He told us he was not lost in Ikebukuro station, but he got off the train one station before in order to take a walk and a good look around the area as part of the research. He obviously did not realised how far it was from the station to the park. He says, 'I am sorry I was a bit late. ... Meeting here at 1:00pm? No. I thought it was 1:30!' The meeting with the culture foundation was succesfull, and then we had chilled beers on the balcony at Kamikado's office, talking about philosophical matters. Then Mr. Kumagai invited us to very nice sushi restaurant in Ikebukuro. I was very impressed Adam can manage all odd sea food, he even said those are his favourite. (HK) |

| Sunday, 13th November, "English Test" |
| Emily's National English Test today at Shirayuri High School in Morioka. I remember the last time we had to wait for over two hours because of we registered late just before the test began. So today we went to the school 30 min. earlier hoping to get no.1, but what we got was already 52. So many high school and junior high school children there, probably over 300 for three different grades of the test. Emily came out happily after about one hour, saying she enjoyed the interview today with interviewer was a nice old man. Then we went to get her and my new winter shoes in town and also a portable CD player for her birthday.(HK) |

I went down to Tokyo to supervise the setting of my sculpture in Shinsuna Project tomorrow. First we set the triangle pieces in the courtyard.(HK) |
