Jan, Kate and Emily Jan & Kate on the fringe 20years ago...
My friend Jan came to stay the night in Edinburgh. We all went in to the High Street to see the street performers and Jan and I realised that we last performed together 20 years ago in the Edinburgh International Festival Fringe with the Newcastle Universtiy Dance Company we set up. Kata insisted on putting these rather inelegant photos up on the diary - we were not bad, in fact the first reviews I had in the Scottish newspapers were for dancing not sculpture! Wonderful to see Jan again, who is still dancing professionally but mainly running a dance education project in the Midlands, and to hear about her years developing her dancing techniques in Amsterdam and Brazil. (KT)

Sun. 5th. August,"Stonehaven"

On the way back from the show opening in Aberdeen, we stopped in Stonehaven, where we were invited to the lunch by a family living near the sea who were at my opening yesterday.
Breathtaking view. They want to create a kind of sculpture walk along the coast, they told us. (HK)

Many thanks to my cousins Emma & Oliver, and Craig who looked after Emily and Sean while we were enjoying Kata`s exhibition talk and opening today.

The opening went very well - several people said they had never seen so many vistors for a talk or an opening at Peacock before, but we were so busy talking to many old friends, and meeting new people, that we forgot to take any photos!

Then Kata and I went to stay with Lisa and Peter and enjoyed a very good bottle of champagne for Peter`s birthday. (KT)

Friday,3rd.August,"Peacock exhibition is ready"

Xander and I Eden loading sculptures into Van gallery 1- view 1 gallery 1- view 2,

no photograph of gallery 2 -sorry!

Yesterday we were honoured with a visit by the new Japanese Consul Gerneral from Edinburgh. Admin. work, Kate plotting with Chris for how to achieve a Japanese/Scottish architects forum at SSW next year. And then a wonderful evening with Rod Scott and his family, old friends of Kate's family.

Today - setting my big piece in Gallery (HK). We finally finished at 9pm when Lindsay came back to lock up and looked extremely relieved that the chinese puzzle of stone blocks had actually become a sculpture. Xander was a star, we could never have done it without him! (KT)

Wednesday, 1st.August,"Iron casting day"/Exhibition setting/sushi party

George with the kiln Eden and George melted in 20mins casting
Today the students are casting their work into iron.
Kata and I watched the first iron pour of the students` work at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop before dashing off with the first load of Kata`s sculpture to be installed at Peacock visual arts Gallery.
Where we discovered to our relief that it was just possible to get the van through the archway to the venue with 1.5cm to spare overall.

Sushi Factory
- Having negotiated several 'Harry Potter" style manoeuvers with the van we raced back to SSW where we had promised a sushi dinner to the hard working students as Kata knew this would be his last evening with them before his exhibition opening.
They had all skipped lunch in anticipation of the feast and hunger inspired all hands to the decks.
Possibly the clearest illustration of the multicultural exchange which is a major goal of Kata`s residency and exhibition as part of Japan 2001
-all the Japanese food prepared by several nationalities was finished in 30 minutes!
Then on to the "Lumsden Arms" for a night cap.
Bob said that as soon as he saw Kata and me walk in he knew it was going to be a lock in!
Kata and I met in this bar in the wilds of north east Scotland 13 years ago, so Brenda and Willie were pleased to see us back, and I even ended up as a barmaid (haven`t done that since I was a student) (KT)
Brenda and WIllie Kate, Bob, me, Dan and? (HK) Kate, Willy and Davie (one of the few locals we knew 13 years ago who is still alive)
