31st.July, "Jimmy's studio"

I came back from Lumsden to Edinburgh with a van hired in Alford yesterday. Picked Kate up in Edinburgh, went to Jimmy's studio to pick up one of my sculptures for the show and then went on to Peacock and SSW. (HK)

29th.July"At Lumsden#9"

A few sunny Sundays in Scotland like today. (HK)

27th. July, "At Lumsden#8"

Bronze casting at SSW today. Eden lit the burner for the melting pot(left). Mike the Tutor and Nicky, his student pouring bronze in to the mould with the assistance of Eden (right). The melting temperature of bronze is something around 1,500c and iron is 2,500c! A hundred years ago iron casting and metal work were the top industries in Britain dominating the world market. Now maybe only sculptors are carrying on this tradition. (HK)

25th. July, "At Lumsden#7"

Invited to supper at Ann and Richard Cole's house tonight. They happened to be Kate's tutors at Newcastle University years ago! (HK)

21st. July, "At Lumsden#6"

Judy and George Beasley invited everybody to their BBQ party at their Mill House in Rhynie, the next village. Nice food and nice interesting people. Enjoyed very much until very late. George is working on casting iron a lot, he helped to set up the SSW foundary as well. They are talking about fixing their Mill house in the future. But ofcourse, the cost would be astronomical! But it would be fantastic to see a 200 year old Mill working again. (HK)

19th. July, "At Lumsden#5"

A day off. I went to Aberdeen with Cris, the director of SSW, to PEACOCK to discuss various things for the show opening on 4th August. Transport 3t stone seems to me a bit of work but should not to be a serious problem! We also went to supermarket and shops to get a fresh vegetables and fish! (HK)

16th. July, "At Lumsden#4"

Since 1983, I started coming up to Scottish Sculpture Workshop in this small town, Lumsden. Last time was something like 1988, I do not remember. Anyway, I was back in the Bar at the Lumsden Arms Hotel and met Brenda and Willy again! After talking about what happened in the world, I asked "where is that nice old Alester who used to sit at the corner table tonight, and the others?" "She smilled and answered, "Those old men are all dead a long time ago, Mr.Katagiri!!" . (HK)

15th. July, "At Lumsden#3"

We are expecting 10 students from Colorado, USA for 4weeks from tomorrow. 2 tutors arrived and started preparing for the students working. 5 sculpture students and 5 performance students are going to make something, and at the end of the days they are going to have a performance at the Edinburgh Fringe. Sounds very interesting!(HK)

14th. July, "At Lumsden#2"

Roddy was sweeping the floors in all the studios today. He could not try again in the foundary today without SSW staff, because Engi and Ginny went off to Aberdeen to get all stuff out from their flat, so they can go to Lewis for two months, where they are going to learn blacksmith work, forgeing etc. They are very excited about it. (HK)

13th. Friday July, "At Lumsden#1"

Now, I'm ready to start?! Anyway I've got the piece of stone here, a nice chunk of Scottish red granite. This time I want to take time before I start chipping away. Well prepare for the show, for a change. At the foundary right next to the stone carving area, Roddy was working on his bronze casting with the help of Engi and Ginny. Just as the bronze was starting to melt, gas, the fuel ran out, and failed . He said, "Oh, Friday thirteenth, today! xxxx" (HK)

12th. July "Ancient Piramid" of Katagiri's

This sculpture was made in 1983, the first piece ever I made in Scotland. Strange to see this piece with Emily standing right next to it. The title of this piece is "Beauty Is A Blaze" Time flies so fast. They dumped me in Lumsden and left to Edinburgh this afternoon. Home Alone! (HK)

12th. July "Transport Museum in Alford"

Very famouse transport museum in Alford! Cassic cars are still registered and will be driven outside in the circuit once a year. We also had a nice train ride in the country side.(HK)

11th July, "Scottish Sculpture Workshop"

Peter and Ginny in the SSW kitchen with kate, Emily and Sean. Emily and Sean trying to annoy Fred! Emily and Sean's "Museum"
Kate and children together drove me to Lumsden and stayed for a few days as a family holidays! Chris kindly let us all stay in the Workshop. Went to see Fred. (HK)

9th. July, "Playing in Garden"

Not so hot in Scotland, as usual I guess. what a difference from being in Tokyo. Nice to see kids again and reunion of Katagiri family. (HK)

7th.July, "In Tokyo"

First night in Tokyo, I stayed with Fam. Kamikado. This is his daughter, Sarina Kamikado. Next day we went to shopping together to get me a travel bag and haircut for 1,000yen! Then I went to visit my sister, Yukiko near Tokyo Disney Land, where I stayed and next morning flew from Narita Airport to Edinburgh . (HK)

6th. July, "Mori Building"

Ackechi and the designers
Drove overnight from Ukishima, and I have just set my fountain piece for the very posh restaurant on the top of one of the new Caesar Pelli skyscrapers of Mori building in Atago, Tokyo. In this building, it was over 35c!! A bunch of Workers sweat completely with helmets on crowded and waiting to go up in the lift just reminded me British mining industry in the past!(HK)
1st. July, "Chestnut tree"
Everywhere in Ukishima flowering the chestnut tree, which smell's amazingly strong and sweet. Attracting a lot of flies!! (HK)
